Scope of Work
You may be looking at your house and thinking about how to improve the flow, design, or use of different spaces to really personalize your home. While you do not need to know exactly what you want to have done, it is best to have an idea of what is not working (layout, design, function, etc.) so the estimator can work with you to determine the best course of action for your project. It is also a good idea to be clear on the general scope of your project (will we be looking at one or two rooms or the whole first floor, for example), your budget, and your personal design preferences so when your estimator arrives, they can let you know not only what is possible but also how it can be done, the budget needed to make it happen, and give you honest feedback as well as other you may have not considered. Estimators have seen it all and know better than anyone how spaces can be utilized and improved. They will consider your original plans and offer feedback and suggestions in order to help make your remodeling dreams come true.
Preparing Questions
To be prepared for your estimate appointment, you want to ensure you have your list of questions so your estimator can assist you the best way possible. The estimate is not only for the estimator to gather measurements and discuss the scope of work, but it is also a great time for you to have all things answered that you may not know or think you know and want clarification on. Some examples include: When can my project start? How long will my project take? Is my budget realistic? Are there any impediments to my desired outcome (for example, moving drains and pipes to relocate plumbing fixtures may be cost-prohibitive – the estimator can offer budget adjustments or possible alternatives)? If you are in a condo building or if you have an HOA, it may be a good idea to see if they have any restrictions or requirements regarding the work you are looking to have done before the estimate, that way there are no surprises once the project gets underway. These issues can be addressed during the estimate in case they add expenses or time to the scope of the project.
Materials
When preparing for a home improvement project, the materials are a big part of planning and budget considerations. It is important that you plan enough time to choose and order materials, as well as to allow for appropriate manufacturing and/or delivery times.
